A Healthwatch volunteer perspective... of volunteering
We asked one of volunteersa few questions about their expeirnces voluneeting with us, read below what they had to say.
Q] How did you find out about the volunteer opportunities at Healthwatch Lincolnshire?
A] Having volunteered for another organisation locally for some time, I wanted to find a connection with care in the community and to use different skills.
I looked online for volunteering in my area and Healthwatch Lincolnshire popped up as an option. I hadn’t heard of Healthwatch but after researching their website, there seemed so much scope for every kind of volunteer activity connected with health and social care.
Q] Was it easy to contact them and find out more?
A] Yes there was an application form and a chat with the Volunteer Officer, so they could get to know me better and what skills and interests I would enjoy in my volunteering role. There was some paperwork and references along with a volunteer induction, but it was an easy process and regular contact and support from the Volunteer Officer. I was given the opportunity to buddy up with experienced volunteer mentors and observe what happened first, so I could have a taster to some of the activities.
Q] What kind of things have you done so far and how was the volunteering experience?
A] Since joining Healthwatch Lincolnshire almost a year ago, I have been encouraged to get involved as much or as little as suited me. I volunteer with the support of a Volunteer Officer, who keeps in regular contact and is always there to answer any questions or concerns, as she does with all of the volunteers. We are kept well informed and offered encouragement and a wide variety of training.
Training has also been offered and any that I have attended I have enjoyed. It is a good way of meeting other volunteers, who share their desire to improve health and care outcomes for Lincolnshire residents.
Q] Why do you think others may enjoy volunteering with us?
A] As well as being involved in their local community, people can also volunteer from home. I sometimes contribute to the reader panel activities. I like that I feel I belong to the team of Healthwatch Lincolnshire. There is a lot of variety and different activities for a volunteer to get involved with.
Q] How has volunteering for Healthwatch Lincolnshire benefitted you?
A] I have thoroughly enjoyed the last year, meeting so many people living in Lincolnshire, being part of a great team of volunteers. I have also learnt a lot about the health and social care system. I feel what I do as a volunteer is making a difference. I think not only do Healthwatch Lincolnshire benefit from volunteers like me being able to talk to more Lincolnshire residents, but I also benefit personally and really look forward to my time out and about.
Q] What has been the highlight of your time volunteering for Healthwatch Lincolnshire so far?
A] I really enjoy talking to people and meeting some of the staff when visiting different locations and helping people to share their health and care experiences, be it good or bad.
Q] If anyone was thinking of volunteering, why should they get involved with Healthwatch Lincolnshire?
A] If you want to make a difference, if you believe that everyone has a right to be heard and receive quality health and social care services, then talk to our Volunteer Officer to register your interest. Volunteering for Healthwatch Lincolnshire is second to none and I really enjoy being a part of the team.
