Healthwatch Lincolnshire Respiratory Health Report 2024: Understanding Residents' Experiences of Respiratory Care

Healthwatch Lincolnshire conducted a survey to understand residents’ experiences of accessing and receiving care for these conditions, ensuring that patient voices help shape the future of respiratory health services in the county.
By gathering insights into service accessibility, diagnosis, treatment, and support, this report highlights both good practice and areas for improvement in respiratory care. The findings will support Lincolnshire’s health and care system in reviewing and enhancing respiratory services to better meet the needs of residents.
Key Findings
Healthcare Access and Experiences
- Diagnosis: While 70% of respondents were diagnosed correctly the first time, those with conditions such as COPD and bronchiectasis often faced longer waiting times for diagnosis and specialist referrals.
- Waiting Times: 31% were waiting for further tests, treatments, or diagnoses, with many experiencing cancellations and delays, leading to frustration and uncertainty.
- Emergency Care: 38% had needed urgent or emergency care for their respiratory condition in the past year. Some praised the care received, while others faced long waiting times.
Treatment and Services
- Medication: 89% of respondents took medication for their condition, but 41% faced challenges in accessing the right treatments, including medication shortages and difficulties obtaining specialist prescriptions.
- Support Beyond Medication: 24% had been offered additional treatment such as pulmonary rehabilitation, breathing exercises, or mental health support. However, many called for more holistic support, including lifestyle guidance and local support groups.
Areas for Improvement
- Reducing Inequalities: There were significant disparities in access to respiratory services across Lincolnshire, particularly for those with rarer conditions like pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease.
- Better Communication and Coordination: Many respondents highlighted poor communication between healthcare providers, particularly between local and out-of-county services.
- Faster Diagnosis and Treatment: Reducing waiting times and improving access to diagnostic tests and specialist care was a key concern.
- More Local Support: There were calls for more community-based clinics, respiratory specialists, and peer support groups.
- Improved GP Access and Training: Respondents wanted better training for primary care professionals in recognising and managing respiratory conditions.
